Book Review on How To Teach Ehglish
When I went through the content of this book, I felt it was very different from other books I had read. Many books, they provide the theories, principles or many obscure and unpractical methods for us. In contrast, this book is a very practical book concentrating on examples of teaching and teaching practice rather than on detailed analysis of learning theory. It is the real guide for us, the would-be teachers or teachers at an early stage in their careers to depend on.
In this book, the author offers us not only the ideas on what makes a good teacher and what makes a good learner, but also descriptions and examples of language teaching methods. It points out the way the teachers talk to the students at the very beginning of this book. I think it is very necessary to give us a tip to know this issue. The manner in which teachers talk to the students is decisive to the relations between teachers and students. If affably and softly, the atmosphere when teachers and students associate with each other, would be light and relaxed, but we may be worried about that the students would too free to not listen to the teacher any more; if sever and stern, teachers would be so strict that the students feel afraid to draw close. The yardstick is very hard to be controlled, especially for us the would-be teachers without any experience. It is a skill including many details, such as the eye contact, gestures and the mime. The tone the teachers use is also very important. The teachers can change their tones according to the importance of the language knowledge and students’ feedback. It is beneficial for the students’ comprehension.
The author also provides us two nouns, teacher talking time (TTT) and student talking time (STT). I always think that for a new model of teaching class, teacher talking time should be as little as possible and in the traditional class the teacher talking time is too much and not enough stu
