Università di Roma La Sapienza Dottorato in Fisica, XXIV ciclo PhD research project Low-dimensional interacting bosons Candidate: Serena Cenatiempo Supervisors: Dr. Alessandro Giuliani Prof. Vincenzo Marinari Introduction: the model and review of known results In the mid 1990s the realizations of Bose condensation in the context of low-interacting and dilute atomic gases (see [1] and references therein) have brought a renewed urry of interest on the subject of BEC. Moreover, more recent experiments on gases in at or elongated traps (see [2] for references) justify the study of Bose condensation in low dimensional systems, in addition to the undoubtedly interesting three dimensional case. The problem is the study of the following Hamiltonian, describing a system of -dimensional bosons of mass , in a box of size with periodic boundary conditions, interacting with a repulsive short range potential : with (1) in the grand-canonical ensemble with chemical potential xed in such a way that the total density is xed. In particular we are interested in the study of the ground state and low temperature properties of the system, that is in computing: the specic free energy at low temperatures (i.e. ): Tr with xed in such a way that the system has density ; the specic ground state energy ;
