Abstract: The paper expounds the theory framework of the “adaptive reuse of old building”, tracing it back to two important culture movements in the 20th century-the art of Collage and social and environmental causes of Conservation.

Introduction
Gradually, there is a world wide awakening and progressive experimentation with the redesign and reuse of existing buildings, landscapes and urban infrastructure. with ever increasing economic pressure on a diminishing inventory of available opportunities and with greater interest in the wisdom of the historic preservation and sustainability movements, much greater attention is being paid to the potential of redesigning and adaptively reusing existing environments. This trend will certainly continue, and even increase, for the pressures causing it are rooted in a reality of shrinking resources and expanding urban growth. Furthermore, talented designers are demonstrating new and exciting ways of revitalizing older, previously dismissed structures and cityscapes. In addition, existing structures and aging landscapes are increasingly being understood as having new important value from two emerging critical/cultural perspectives (the material culture and sustainability discourses). At first they appear to be strange bedfellows, having surfaced from two very separate intellectual traditions over the post fifty years (cultural theory and the environmental movement), but in fact they share rather important common interest for invitational planning and design, namely elevating the the potential value of existing, often marginalized, structures and property.
