Dep artment of Rad iolo y , PLA General H osp ital, Beij in 100853, China) [Abstract] Objective T o study the signal chang es and metabolic alt eratio ns in the basal g ang lia ( BG) by using M R and 1 pr oto n mag net ic resonance spectr oscopy ( H- M R S) in patients w ith subclinical hepatic encephalopathy ( SHE) . Methods M R and 1 H- M RS in the basal g ang lia in 27 patients ( 22 males, 5 females, the age ranged fr om 29 t o 62 y ear s, mean age 43 years) with definite liver cir rhosis w ere studied. F ourteen pat ients w ere classified as having SH E evaluated by number co n- nection test ( NCT ) and sy mbo l digit test ( SDT ) . Eig hteen age- matched healthy volunteers ( 13 males, 5 females, the ag e ranged fro m 24 to 5 1 year s, mean age 38 years) under went M R and 1 H- M R S fo r compariso n. Results N A A/ Cr lev els showed no st at istical differ ence among patients w ith and w ithout SH E and the contro l gr oup ( P 0. 05) . V alues of sig nal hy per intensities in globus pallidus and ratio s of m / Cr and Cho/ Cr showed no differences bet ween t he contr ol g ro up and the patients w ithout SHE ( P 0. 05) , w hereas t hey w ere sig nificantly differ ent in patients w ithout and w ith SH E ( P 0 . 001) .
