He lived in the late of the 19th century, the Victoria Age, in which the society had a tremendous change both in economy and politics. Therefore, most of his works described capitalism?exploit on the farmer and make their life become more and more suffering. Tess爋f爐he燿ad ’Urbervilles is Hardy’s most famous novel, which is considered as one of the most excellent tragedies in the literary history of the Great Britain. The previous literary research of this novel has tended to focus on its protagonists, which is not sufficient enough to reveal the main reasons of Tess’s tragic fate. Firstly, HeYamin and other scholars believe that only from the perspective of feminist criticism can find the reasons for the tragedy of Tess. MeiYingchu tries to from the aspects of social and family to reveal the inevitably tragic fate of Tess. Finally, YangJianmei researches all the meanings of Tess’s several important travels, reveals the deep meaning of walk and exercise. However, the author finds that there are few researchers analyze the causes of Tess’s tragedy from the feminist perspective. Therefore, this thesis just fills up this vacancy. Through the analysis of this topic, the author hopes that it can give some help to modern women and provide some inspiration for them to change their life.
