John Milton Paradise Lost Paradise Lost is a long epic. The stories are taken from the Old Testament. Paradise Lost was actually written after Milton became totally blind. He spent seven years upon this epic poem. The rebellious Satan is the embodiment of the revolutionary Milton. In spite of his blindness, he endeavors to do his utmost. The Paradise Lost The Paradise Lost is the greatest, indeed the only generally acknowledged epic in English literature since Beowulf ; Paradise Lost is Miltons masterpiece. The theme is the Fall of Man, i.e. mans disobedience and the loss of Paradise, with its prime cause -Satan. His purpose was to justify the ways of God to man- i.e. submission to the Almighty. In heaven, Satan led a rebellion against God. Defeated, he and his rebel angels were cast into Hell. However, Satan refused to accept his failure, vowing that “all was not lost”. The poem goes on to tell how Satan took revenge by tempting Adam and Eve, the first human beings created by God, to eat fruit from the tree of knowledge against God’s instructions. For their disobedience, Adam and Eve were driven out of Paradise. The Paradise Adam and Eve They were sorry for what they had done and prayed to God. In the last book they were given the hope for redemption. The poem ended with Adam and Eve walking away from Paradise, hand in hand, and the gates of Eden were closed behind them. Satan Some readers consider Satan to be the hero, or protagonist, of the story, because he struggles to overcome his own doubts and weaknesses and accomplishes his goal of corrupting humankind. Satan, the image Satan and his fellow rebel angels who are found chained to a lake of fire in Hell quickly free themselves and fly to land, where they discover minerals and construct Pandemonium, which will be their meeting place.
