CHAPTER 7 Condition (C) Let f : W → [a, b] be a Morse function on a cobordism W and v an f- gradient. The gradient descent from ∂ W to ∂ W yields a diffeomorphism 1 0 (−v) : ∂ W \ D (−v) → ∂ W \ D (v); 1 0 by definition (−v)(x) is the point where the trajectory γ x, τ (x, −v); −v intersects ∂ W . The map (−v) does not admit a continuous extension 0 to ∂1W and its properties in general are rather difficult to study. In this 0 part we show that for a C -generic gradient v one can derive from (−v) a geometric structure (which can be called a graded-continuous map) closely resembling a cellular map between CW complexes.
