Reading Passage 1 The South Australian Music Teacher My name is Alan Prothero and I am a peripatetic music teacher. I work in South Australia which is one of the few education authorities in Australia (or around the world) to employ peripatetic music teachers. There are about 50 of us, all working out of Adelaide, the capital of S. A.. We include about 30 full-timers and 20 part-timers. Let me tell you, first, what a peripatetic music teacher is. I am a traveling music teacher. I do not have a job in a single school but travel around the State teaching at seven or eight schools throughout the week. I have to travel about 300 miles a week. Some of the schools are close to Adelaide, so on some days I only travel to two schools, both of them about 10 miles away. On other days I have to travel almost 80 miles to teach the flute to students in towns some distance away. I play a wind instrument and specialize in teaching the flute. There are two other peripatetic flute teachers who travel to other parts of the State. We also have percussion teachers, string and brass teachers and of course other wind instrument teachers who play the clarinet and the oboe. Most of us play and teach at least two instruments. My second instrument is the piccolo. The State also employs general music teachers but these teachers are not peripatetic. They stay at one school all the year round. We travel from school to school because we are specialist teachers. Not enough students at any one school want to specialize in playing the flute, the violin, the trombone or the drums, so wind, string, brass and percussion teachers are traveling the roads around South Australia every day of the school year to make sure that all the school students who want to learn a particular instrument have specialist teaching.
