An analysis of processes used in Obama’ speech Abstract: There are mainly six processes in language to describe our experiences, which are material process, mental process, relational process, verbal process, existential process and behavioral process. Different process are used by people to play different functions. In this paper, I will choose the text of Obama’s speech, and make analysis of processes in it to find out the reason for the selection of these processes. Key words: material process; mental process; relational process; verbal process; existential process ; behavioral process; processes Language was the representation of worlds, either perceived or imagined. It endows our experience, and thereby plays a crucial role in our involvement with other people, or inanimate matters. Our experiences consist of ‘going—on’: happening, doing, sensing, meaning, being and becoming. All this goings on are sorted ort in the grammar of clause. According to haliday, there are sis processes in language to describe goings—on of our experiences. They are material process; mental process; relational process; behavioral process; existential process; verbal process. These processes are used in oral or written discourse to help speaker or writer to play different functions. 1.1 Material process It describes a process of doing, which was used most in oral or written discourse.
