Further questions for discussion About the author John Murray was born in Australia in 1963. During most of the 90’s he worked as an epidemiologist for the Center of Disease Control in Atlanta after earning his masters in public health from Johns Hopkins University. This position allowed him to travel to many developing countries in Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, and those travels helped enrich many of the themes in his debut collection. In 1999, John and his family moved to Iowa where he enrolled in the Iowa Writer’s Workshop on a teacher-writer fellowship. About the author He spent the next two years writing A Few Short Notes on Tropical Butterflies: long, elegant narratives that jump from continent to continent, exploring ideas about family, national identity, memory, loss, love, science, and medicine. Vivid and alive, these stories reveal whole lives -- characters caught between the past and the present, between different cultures, and between their intellects and emotions. And they are often searching to reconcile their new lives with the ones they’ve left behind. About the author In beautiful language, with both frankness and compassion, Murray often highlights the disparities between developing and developed countries and depicts people’s struggles to understand their lives and find meaning in a world that is often brutal and senseless. And yet, knowing that real life must somehow be lived, Murrays characters push forward, both burdened and comforted by their memories and obsessions. A short story from this volume, “The Hill Station” won the Prairie Lights Short Fiction Award, and the title story of the collection was selected by Joyce Carol Oates for the Best New American Voices 2002 anthology of short fiction.
