World Expo Shanghai 2010 Since 1851 when the Great Exhibition of Industries of all Nations was held in London, the World Expositions have gained increasing prominence as grand events for economic, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges, serving as an important platform for displaying historical experience, exchanging new ideas, demonstrating inventions and looking to the future. With an old civilization, China favors international exchange and loves world peace. China owes her successful bid for the World Exposition in 2010. Being the first World Exposition on the theme of city, Exposition 2010 will focus on the theme Better City, Better Life. This theme represents a central concern of the international community for future policy making, urban strategies and sustainable development. The mascot of Expo 2010 Shanghai China is “Haibao”, which in Chinese means the treasure of the ocean. It’s designed to resemble the Chinese character for “human”. The emblem looks like the Chinese character for “world”. It is also combined with the numbers “2010” in a way that resembles a celebrating family. It expresses the philosophies of Expo 2010 Shanghai China: “Understanding, communication, togetherness, and cooperation.” Expo 2010 Shanghai China will be a grand international gathering. About 200 nations and international organizations will be attracted to take part in the exhibition as well as 70 million visitors from home and abroad. The World Expo 2010 Shanghai, which begins on May 1 and ends on October 31, will find a venue in its Puxi site when the Expo Museum opens there. The museum will display the splendid world fair as well as the Expo history since 1851 and future Expos. Oct 1, 2010 is the grand opening day of the China Pavilion. The Pavilion is designed to express the philosophy of China, to show the culture of the Chinese people, and to improve friendly international communication and improved cultural exchange between other nations and China.
