With the economy and indigenous population increasing , expanding the overseas market became necessary . Thus , Britain established many colonies in the world . Colonialism is the building and maintaining of colonies in one territory by people from another territory . Social structure ,government economic and other things within the territory of the colony are influenced by the colonists . There are 56 countries and 2 regions that used to be the colony of Britain ,such as India Pakistan , Singapore , Hong Kong , Australia , Kenya and Sri Lanka .
