Enhancing E-Government and Internet Technology in the Public Sector Michael E. Milakovich Public Administration Program School of Business Administration- University of Miami, Florida, USA, 33124 Abstract Demand for more accessible and efficient government services, combined with shrinking government resources and greater access to the Internet, has created opportunities for the expansion of electronic government or e-gov. This term refers generally to governments use of information technology (IT) as an enabling strategy for improving organizational performance. Expanded use of e-gov technology increases citizen access to information at reduced costs and enhances citizen-directed government services When fully operational, e-gov will enable citizens to increase civic knowledge, improve confidence in government performance, and enhance the quality of information received. This paper shows how new technologies are being merged with traditional governmental functions to to do more with less and enhance the delivery of public services. Taxes and budgets link authorizations; appropriations, purposes, policymaking, program goals, resources, and results to help government better serve a nation of 300 million citizens more efficiently and at lower costs. Fiscal and budgetary policy are strongly influenced by two crucial constraints: growing federal and state budget deficits and the relatively small, but increasing, discretionary spending that must, by law, be subject to review by executive and legislative branches each year.
