ABSTRACT AIM: To observe the efficacy of glipizide GITS( gastrointestinal therape tic system) in the treatment of
secondary fail re to s lfonyl rea in nonins lin-dependent diabetes mellit s(NIDDM) . M THODS: Sixty-fo r patients
with secondary fail re to s lfonyl reas in NIDDM were allocated randomly and evenly into treatment gro p and control
gro p. The patients in treatment gro p received glipizide GITS ( 32 cases) . The patients in control gro p ( 32 cases) re-
ceived immediate release glipizide. The patients of 2 gro ps received 8-week treatment (The treatment gro p was divided
into two stages: 4-week dosage reg lation period and 4-week dosage maintenance period) . Oral gl cose tolerance test
( OGTT) and ins lin releasing test were repeated before treatment and after treatment in 2 gro ps of NIDDM patients. In-
s lin reaction to gl cose ( IRG) and ins lin sensitivity index ( ISI) were calc lated. The varieties of plasma gl cose,
plasma ins lin, IRG, ISI and clinical effect of 2 gro pswere comparedbefore treatment and after treatment. R SULTS:
The patients in treatment gro p were improved in ISI and decreased in plasma gl cose level after treatment as compared
