Illustrated are some details of metro systems of 6 cities, namely their opened dates, lengths and annual volumes of passengers. ? Overall, the lengths of the 6 underground systems are negatively correlated with their opened dates ? Built in 1863 and carrying 775 million passengers every year, the subway in London is the earliest and longest one with a length of 394 kilometers. While the one in Los Angeles, completed in 2001, is the newest, only serving 50 million people every year in a route which is merely 28 kilometers’ long. Among these 6 cities, the metro of Tokyo is the one transporting commuters of the largest amount, which is 1927 million within its 155 kilometers’ system. And although the one of Paris, opened in 1900, has the second greatest number of annual person trips, the number (1191 million) is almost two times less than that of Tokyo. Besides, Its length is 199 kilometers, longer than that of Tokyo. The dates when the metro systems in Washington DC and Kyoto were established are very close, in respectively 1976 and 1981. But the lengths are significantly different. With a capacity of delivering 144 million citizens per year, the one in Washington DC is 126 kilometers long while that of Kyoto travels only 11 kilometers, serving 45 million people every year.
