Abstr act : Based on the analysis of the disadvantages of traditional GM codes, the concept of STEP
and STEP2NC, which are the new standar ds of numer ic contr ol, are described. The machining pr ocess
based on traditional GM codes is compared with that based on the STEP2NC. Simplified abstract
STEP2NC data model and its EXPRESS2G representation are discussed, and the structure and content
of the STEP2NC progr am and the scope and content of related standards are introduced. Some prob2
lems about STEP2NC are pointed out.
