Acid-Base Bingo Acid-Base Bingo is a fun way for students to learn what household items are acidic and what are basic. They will learn about indicators and special paper with indicators on them called litmus paper. Many acids and bases can be found in your home. Acids are things that usually taste sour and sting when they get in your eye or a cut. Bases are things that usually feel slippery or taste bitter. Do not taste things in a lab because it could be dangerous. Indicators can be used to see if something is an acid or a base. In an acid an indicator will turn red and in a base an indicator will turn blue. Litmus paper is special paper that has an indicator on it so that it will turn red or blue in acids or bases. Materials Group 1 + 5 Lemon Juice Cranberry Juice Vinegar Astringent Baking Soda and water Detergent and water Group 2 + 6 Windex Egg Whites Soda Apple juice Catsup Pickle Juice Group 3 + 7 Salad Dressing Orange Juice Dran-O Borax and water Milk of Magnesia Bleach and water Group 4 + 8 Coffee Half and Half Ammonia and water Mr. Bubbles Soft Scrub Salsa 48 Containers Litmus paper or cabbage juice Acid-Base Bingo Cards Red bingo chips Blue bingo chips Toothpicks or droppers (for cabbage juice) Pour two containers of each material for a total of 48 containers. Break students up into 8 groups and give each group 6 of the materials to test with the corresponding worksheet and litmus paper. Each Group has their own worksheets to fill out for their six materials. Have them use toothpicks to dip into the liquid and then onto the litmus paper. If using cabbage juice have the students pour 2-3 drops into each solution. I find that the litmus paper works best. While the students are testing make a list on the board of the different materials and when they are done have them raise their hands to tell whether each material turned red or blue. After writing down what everything is hand out the bingo cards. Bingo is played like regular bingo only
