长对话： –housing and environment： M: Hello, my name’s Peter. Im calling about the apartment advertised in the paper. Can you tell me something about it? W: Yes, it’s a one-bedroom apartment, with a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom and a balcony. M: Where is it located? W: Its on Montreal Road. M: Is it furnished? W: Yes, it is furnished with sofas, a dining table, chairs and some electric appliances. M: How much is the rent? W: It’s five hundred dollars per month, including utilities. M: You mean gas, electricity and heat? W: Yes, thats right. M: Is there anything like management fee or parking fee? W: The management fee is included in the rent. But parking is fifty dollars a month. M: Can I come and have a look at it today? W: Yes, how about one oclock this afternoon? M: One oclock sounds fine. See you then. W: See you. 2. M: Is the Earth really getting warmer? W: There’s no doubt at all that the earth is getting warmer. Scientists tell us it is true that four years out of the last ten have been the hottest since records began. And so if this effect—the greenhouse effect continues, it’s fairly certain that within the next century, the earth will have heated up by four degrees. M: But why does it matter if the world gets warmer? W: It matters because it changes a lot of things to do with our everyday life. If the earth gets hotter, this will cause the level of the sea to rise by about between one and one-and-a-half meters over the next hundred years. It doesn’t sound much—it’s really a lot. It’ll cause flooding—large areas of the Indian coast, Holland, London even, will be under water. M: And would there be any other effects? W: There will be many other effects. One of the things that will happen is that we will have more storms. This will cause a lot of damage—damage to crops, to houses and to people.
