* * * * DigitalGlobe is the only commercial imagery provide with multiple sub-meter satellites currently in orbit. QuickBird has been in orbit since 2001, and is expected to continue to operate into 2009 and beyond. The successful launch of WorldView-1, the most agile commercial satellite ever flown, increases our ability to collect imagery over 5 times that of QuickBird alone, plus the enhanced ability to collect stereo imagery. When WorldView Launches, our collection capacity will increase to over 10 times that of QuickBird, with greatly improved multispectral capabilities. Both WorldView-1 and 2 will have substantially greater capacity to store and download imagery over QuickBird, but, the story isn’t simply the increase in capacity, it’s the combination of the increased capacity, a larger footprint, plus increased agility, which truly delivers improved currency. * * This series of images represents visually how the increased capacity and agility of WorldView-1 and 2 will impact our ability to gather high quality imagery over the population centers around the globe. As you can see, with QuickBird alone, there are several large areas throughout the US and Europe that will take over 30 months to refresh, meaning that we will only be able to recapture imagery for a particular area once every 2-3 years. This is due to a combination of QuickBird’s capabilities, competition for the satellite, and seasonal cloud cover. However, with the addition of WorldView-1, the picture changes completely. * With QuickBird and WorldView-1, the time required to recapture imagery over global population centers drops dramatically. Most areas of the globe can be refreshed in as little as 3-5 months, and even the most difficult areas over North America and Western Europe can be refreshed in less than 15 months.
