Abstract: Resulting from cultural discrepancies, some animal figures show different connotations in English and Chinese proverbs, but there are also some similarities because of the commonness of people’s psychological features and the way of thinking. This paper illustrates and discusses the differences and similarities of animal figures between English and Chinese proverbs from the aspects of living environment, historical allusion, national psychological differences and religious thoughts and concepts, so as to provide some implication for intercultural communication.

摘要:由于文化差异,大多数英语谚语和汉语谚语中的同一动物形象往往具有不同的意义。但是相通的人类心理特点和思考方式也使得英汉谚语中有些动物形象具有相同的文化内涵。本文借助一些典型的例子,从生活环境、历史典故、民族心理以及宗教信仰等方面,探讨了英语谚语和汉语谚语中动物形象之间存在的相同点与不同点,并从中得到一些启示,可为跨文化交际提供一定的借鉴意义。

Introduction
Proverbs, most outstanding part of a language, represent the unique characteristics and cultural features of a nation. In content, proverbs are closely connected with history, everyday life and living conditions of a nation. In form, they are mostly presented by sentences that cannot be substituted easily. In usage, they are mainly employed by the grass roots in their daily oral communication.
