Topic 10 Early Language acquisition Introduction All normal children naturally ‘pick up’ their native language in a few years. They do not seem to make any conscious efforts to learn the language, and they do not benefit from any formal instruction. Yet, they become fluent speakers of their native language before they reach the school age. Children’s marvelous capacity for acquiring their native language has been a subject of interest for a long time, and in the second half of the 20th century researchers began to analyze child language systematically and to try to discover the nature of the
