1897 May 18, 1897: The Dow Chemical Company is incorporated, based on Herbert H. Dows plan to manufacture and sell bleach on a commercial scale. 1898 First commercial scale production of bleach begins. Dow-in-diamond mark was created to help resolve product shipping problems. 1900 Midland Chemical Company merges into Dow Chemical. 1901 Herbert Dow institutes a profit sharing plan with employees. 1904 Dow establishes its own sales department. 1906 Dow produces its first product for fruits and flowers, giving rise to the companys agricultural chemicals division. Dow produces sodium benzoate as food preservative. 1908 Agricultural chemicals division established based on a spray for fruit trees. 1910 First sales of lime sulfur (calcium sulfide) and lead arsenate sprays to farm chemical businesses. 1911 Dow begins string of years with unreduced dividends for stockholders. 1913 Herbert H. Dow announces the company will exit the bleach business. Focus shifts to the value of chlorine as a raw material. Dow stock rises dramatically. 1916 Dow first markets calcium chloride, magnesium metal and acetyl salicylic acid. 1918 Herbert H. Dow named president of Dow. The company adopts its diamond trademark. 1919 First basic research laboratory was established. Dow begins promoting and selling Dow metal magnesium. 1921 Tommy Milton wins the Indianapolis 500 auto race using pistons made with Dowmetal magnesium. Dow Diamond registered in U.S. Patent Office. 1922 Dow introduces record number of new products, including ethylene dibromide for use in ethyl gasoline. 1925 Dow granted patent for new calcium chloride flake. Dow Gardens in Midland created. 1928 Styrene and Saran developed. 1929 Dow hires its first woman researcher, Sylvia Stoesser. 1930 Herbert H. Dow awarded the Perkin Medal for Chemical Achievement.
