The Effective Use of Core Tasks in Assessing Pupil’s Performance and Progress in PE What are Core Tasks ? They are activity-based challenges They represent a complete piece of work for pupils to achieve They give pupils a clear picture of what they are aiming for They are designed to match the physical, mental and emotional maturity of the majority of pupils in age group and provide a link with expectations of a particular level What are Core Tasks? They grow in difficulty and complexity as pupils make progress They are progressive They enable pupils’ progress to be recognised and validated They ensure consistency across the county and across the key stages They are a useful planning tool Each core task focuses on the 4 strands of learning in PE: Developing Skills Making and Applying Decisions Developing Physical and Mental Capacity Evaluating and Improving How To Use The Core tasks Select the appropriate core task to suit the level the pupils are working at. At the start of a block of work it maybe useful to show the pupils the core task from the DVD or possibly allow the pupils an opportunity to try it for themselves. How To Use The Core tasks The activities and learning objectives for the unit are found on the back of the core task (activities and objectives are based on the four strands of the curriculum). When the core task was selected based on a benchmarked level there will obviously be some pupils working above and below this benchmark if this is the case the STEP principle should be considered. How To Use The Core Task At the end of the unit allow the pupils the opportunity to participate in the core task to make assessment and check for progress. Involving pupils in their own learning Pupils have a greater understanding of what they are doing and why they are doing it, if they are engaged from the beginning in recognising: what they can do what they need to do to make progress.
