Mechanism of Reversible COX Inhibition -Another drug that inhibits COX is ibuprofen. -Ibuprofen, unlike aspirin, competes with arachidonic acid to bind non-covalently to the active site of COX. - This is an example of competitive substrate inhibition COX active site Summary -COX is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostaglandins and eicosanoids -thromboxane A2, a product from COX-mediated pathway is important for platelet aggregation and coagulation -COX can be inhibited by NSAIDS; ex. aspirin, ibuprofen -COX is inhibited by aspirin through covalent bonding -COX is inhibited by ibuprofen through non-covalent bonding ( competitive substrate ) Bibliography -Baker, R., Murray, R.
