The Newgate were novels published from the late 1820s until the 1840s that were thought to glamorize the lives of the criminals they portrayed. Newgate Calendar is a biography of famous criminals published during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, but usually rearranged or embellished the original tale for melodramatic effect. Twist is an orphan, then a thief and finally regains his identity of a noble. It is about his attacks on social injustices and a plea for a new order of society.
