When you get hungry, you can choose from a variety of Chinese restaurants with cooking ranging from Sichuan pickles (泡菜) to Cantonese dim sum (广式点心).You are not in China: Where could you possibly be then? Welcome to Vancouver, the host city of the Winter Olympic Games. Vancouver is home to North America’s second biggest Chinatown, after San Francisco’s in the US. Chinese is the largest minority ethnic group (少数族裔) of the city. “In some Vancouver schools, more than 90 percent of the students are Chinese; bilingual (双语的) signs are now widespread; Chinese-language newspapers can be found in hotels and shopping centers,” describes Clyde H. Farnsworth, a reporter with The New York Times. Chinese immigrants (移民) have helped Vancouver to develop into a multi-cultural city. However, according to Canada’s CBC news, there are ethnic tensions (关系紧张) in the city. There has been “a widespread perception (观念) that Chinese immigrants…[are] driving up property (房地产) prices, competing for jobs and services, and rapidly altering (改变) established neighborhoods”.The magazine Vancouver has published an article, titled Look What They’ve Done to My Neighborhood. The author regrets that modest, old houses surrounded by gardens and trees have been replaced by Chinese immigrants’ “monster houses” – pretentious (炫耀的) mansions with all sorts of extra bathrooms, recreation rooms and exercise rooms. In spite of the tension, just about everyone agrees that the economic effect of the Chinese immigrants and the investment they have brought have been positive. “The heavy Chinese immigration is one reason why Vancouver outperforms (超过) the rest of the country,” Professor Don J. DeVoretz, an immigration economist at Simon Fraser University told the New York
