Even the smallest “pop” group will usually consist of a guitarist, an electronic keyboard player and a drummer. Until about the mid-twentieth century, however, the guitar was not widely used for playing popular music. Most bands before then relied more on brass (铜管乐器), wind and stringed instruments that were played with a bow (弓), not plucked like a guitar. It wasn’t until groups such as the Beatles became popular that the guitar took over as the most widely played instrument. This is, perhaps, surprising because the guitar and similar instrument have been played worldwide for centuries. It has been popular as a solo instrument and to accompany singers. Although the guitar itself is of Spanish origin, the very similar lute (琵琶) was played in England a thousand years ago. In India the sitar, a kind of large guitar, has for centuries been part of Indian music, and there are also plucked string instruments in Japan and China. The reasons for the popularity of the guitar are easy to understand. Guitars make a pleasant sound even when played by beginners; they can be easily carried from place to place; and they are comparatively cheap to buy.
