Flash Economics Changes in financial wealth: Who will end up owning the world? 04 April 2018 - 349 We look at the trend in the financial wealth of the United States, the euro zone, Japan, China and emerging countries other than China. We calculate financial wealth by adding the amount of outstanding bonds, equities and liquid and monetary assets held in the country. We see a fall in the countries’ (regions’) weight in global financial wealth in the United States, the euro zone and Japan; and an increase in China and in emerging countries excluding China. The changes in countries’ financial wealth are linked to the level of their savings rate. This shows that the weight of China in global financial wealth (17.5% currently versus 2% in 1998) will continue to increase.
