Abstract The Gua Sha vividly presents the cultural differences between Chinese people and Americans through the life experience of an immigrant Chinese family in the U.S.A, including Datong Xu, his wife, his son and his father. Owing to the cultural differences, the Chinese family is confronted with many difficulties in their life although they have been there for eight years. This paper probes into the differences and conflicts in various aspects in Chinese culture and the American culture on the basis of the analysis of the vivid plots which reflect the China-West cultural differences in the movies Gua Sha. Key words: Gua Sha ; Chinese and American culture ;difference ;conflict 中文摘要 刮痧这部影片通过描述一个中国移民家庭许大同和妻子、儿子和父亲在美国的生活经历生动地展现出中美之间文化的差异。尽管他们一家已经在美国生活了八年时间了，但由于文化的差异，让这个中国家庭在生活上面临许多的困难。这篇文章主要从各个方面对影片的各个生动的情节表现出的中美文化差异进行论述和分析。 关键词：刮痧；中美文化；差异；冲突1. Introduction During the Warring State Period, about 200 B.C-300 B.C, a book called Medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor (《黄帝内经》) appeared. This book explains the foundations of human health and illness with illuminating discussions of the doctrine of Yin-Yang and the Five-elements, the description of the human body and its organs, Qi and blood, pathogenic agents, concepts of disease, principles of diagnosis, and a variety of therapies.(杨天庆，2005：255) Gua Sha treatment is just a kind of this traditional Chinese treatment. It is a popular treatment for certain illnesses by scraping the forehead, neck, and chest and back of the patient with a copper coin to cause congestion in the skin vessels to alleviate pain or inflammation in China. Gua Sha has a long history in China, but it is treated as maltreatment in America. The debate around Gua Sha is raised in the courtroom in the movie. This paper mainly analyzes the cultural differences and conflicts between Chinese and Americans from the aspects of the philosophical theories, educating ways, living attitudes, thinking logic, the film location and concept of value, etc. 2.
