Ecologicaleffects ofcleancultureofEriocheir sinensisin shallowmacrophyticlakesAbstractTherearenumerousfreshwaterlakesinChina,andmorethanofthemare experiencingeutrophicationduetorapidregionaleconomicdevelopment.Inorderto investigatethefeasibilityofcleanculturingChinesemittencrabstorestoreeutrophic waters,anddevelopbioremediationtechniquesforeutrophicmacrophyticlakes,we carriedouttwoexperiments asfollows:TheChinesemittencrabswereraisedatdifferentstockingdensitiesas3000 ind/hm2,6000ind/hm2,9000ind/hm2,respectively,innet-penaquacultureareainEast Taihulakebyfeedingaquaticweedsandsnails,and/orbyfeedingexogenousfishand cornas controlforeachtreatment.The results showedthatallcrabsfromeachtreatment groupachieved150ginbodyweight,buttheirbodysizeandfleshincrementwere significantlylowerthanthoseofcontrolgroupfedwithexogenousdiets (p0.05). There wasnosignificantdifferenceinyieldbetweenthelowestdensitygroup(3000ind/hm2) anditscontrolgroup,whiletheyieldsintheothertwogroupsweresignificantlylower thantheircontrolgroups(p0.05).Moreover,therecapturerateofthelowestdensity groupwassignificantlylowerthanitscontrolgroup(p0.05),whilethatoftheother twohigherdensitygroupsdidntshowdifferencewhencomparedwiththeircontrol groups.Resultsalsoindicatedthatthewaterqualityintreatmentareawasbetterthanthatincontrolareawithexogenousfeed,andtheTPcontentsweresignificantlylower (p0.05).Itwasrevealedthatexogenousfeedingmightberesponsibleforhigherlevels ofnitrogenandphosphorusinaquaculturewaterand watereutrophication.Onthe contrary,feedingnaturalaquaticweedsandsnailscouldeffectivelyhandlethe overgrowthofhydrophytes.Meanwhile,nutrientsalts ofnitrogenandphosphoruscould beremovedfromaquaculturewaterbyharvestingtheChinesemittencrab,whichwill playaneffectiveroleinwaterpurification.Whenbothecologicaleffectsandeconomic benefitswereconsidered,itwassuggestedthat,whennatural feedresourceswere utilized,theoptimumstockingdensityofChinesemittencrabaquacultureinshallowAbstractEcologicaleffectsof cleanculture ofEriocheirsi
