The Analysis of the Relationship between Man and Nature in The Return of the Native╳╳╳Abstract：As one of the most widely read novel of Hardy’s “ Novels of Character and Environment”, The Return of the Native is a good example of Hardy’s work dealing with the relationship of characters with natural environment from what we have learned from the novel. In this paper, two places are chosen as the main clues. From the description of the we Wessex and Egdon Heath can analysize the background of the novel. Several characters are chosen in order to show the relationship between them, everybody’s fate is firmly related with the one another.From all the analysis of the relationships between characters and the Heath, it is clear that the most important theme of this novel is the relationship between man and nature. Man is part of nature. In brief, whoever you are, if you want to rebel against nature, you will get your punishment..Key words: Hardy, character, heath, natureIntroductionThomas Hardy(1840—1928), novelist and poet, is one of the representative of English critical realism at the turn of the 19th century. He occupies a prominent position in the history of English literature. Hardy’s fiction writing started from 1860s and ended in 1890s, spanning the most splendid time for English novels in the latter half of the Victorian Age. Most of Hardy’s works inherit the tradition of the realistic trend of English novels, but at the same time it’s not justifiable to classify all his works into the traditional type. He creates a unique artistic world; he himself classified most of his novels into a group “Novels of Character and Environment”. The Return of the Native is one of the most famous novels of this group. It is a good example of Hardy’s work dealing with the relationship of character with natural environment.
