Hard Scattering and QCD Fundamentals at RHIC Michael J. Tannenbaum1 Department of Physics Brookhaven National Laboratory Upton, NY 11973-5000, USA 8 0 0 2 1 Introduction n u In 1998, at the QCD workshop in Paris, Rolf Baier asked me whether jets could be J 2 measured in Au+Au collisions because he had a prediction of a QCD medium-effect on color-charged partons traversing a hot-dense-medium composed of unscreened color- ] charges [1]. I told him [2] that there was a general consensus that for Au+Au central x e collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV, leading particles are the only way to measure jets, - p because in one unit of the nominal jet-finding cone, ∆r = 2 2 e (∆η) + (∆φ) , there is h an estimated π × 1 dET ∼ 375 GeV of energy !(!) The good news was that hard- [ 2π dη scattering in p-p collisions was originally observed by the method of leading particles. 1 The other good news was that the PHENIX detector had been designed to make v 0 1 such measurements and could identify and separate direct single γ and π out to 0 pT ≥ 30 GeV/c [3]. It is ironic that the identification of π0 and the separation from 3 0 direct single γ out to such a large pT in PHENIX was primarily driven by the desire 6. to measure the polarized gluon structure function i
