This increased borehole pressure should cause compression of the gas phase in the borehole, giving more space for liquid phase to take over. As a result, the liquid volume returning to surface should be less than the liquid volume fed to the annulus from bit nozzles. A new steady state flow is established after some transition time. Neglecting the effect of frictional pressure loss, the minimum transition time for reaching a steady flow may be estimated on the basis of pressure increase, annular geometry, and liquid pumping rate.
