The American Civil War His famous saying… END * His life February12,1809-April15,1865 His birth The young Grown-up His death The commemoration(纪念) On February 12, 1809, Lincoln was born in Kentucky Hardin County, a poor family, his father is a cobbler(鞋匠). When he was a child, he helped his home to cut wood, carried water, did farm work. His parents are the descendants(后裔) of England immigrants, they lived by farming and hunting. On 1816, the Lincoln family moved to southwest of Indiana, and dug up the waste land . At the age of 9, his mother died. Then he had a kind stepmother and they lived a good life. Due to poverty, Lincoln education level is not high. In order to sustain(维持) a family, young Lincoln worked as the ferry workers at Ohio river, plantation workers, clerks and more. But Lincoln made extraordinary efforts to attain knowledge while working on a farm, splitting rails for fences(劈栅栏), and keeping store at New Salem. He was a captain in the Black Hawk War, spent eight years in the Illinois legislature, and rode the circuit of courts for many years. His law partner said of him, “His ambition was a little engine that knew no rest.” He married Mary Todd, and they had four boys, only one of whom lived to maturity(成人). In 1846, he was elected to be the United States congressman. In 1847, as a representative of the Whig party, Lincoln attended the Congress campaign, successful, first came to Washington.D.C. In 1858 Lincoln ran against Stephen A. Douglas for Senator. He lost the election,but in debating with Douglas he gained a national reputation that won him the Republican nomination for President in 1860 .
