* Goals Statements of mission or vision provide general direction for the organization, but not for specific programs or management functions. Goal statements are needed to help translate the general direction of the organization into more tangible, results-oriented efforts. Input goals, outcome goals, and avoidance goals (examples?) * Goals and Objectives Goal: “Minimize waste and prevent any damage to the environment.” Objective: “To reduce waste packaging and serving material at the event by 50%, as measured by weight, relative to the previous years.” Objectives are more concrete and should be measurable * 2: Situational Analysis Where are we now? --- Where are we going next? Several major components: Environmental scanning“ seeks to identify conditions and underlying forces shaping events Future scanning extends trends into the future to assess the probability and potential impacts of future conditions Resource appraisals examine the availability of human, financial, political and material support to meet the events goals. * Environmental scanning Considers what forces are acting on the event and the event sector. Sometimes the acronym PEST is used: Political forces Economic forces Social forces Technological forces * SWOT Analysis A useful exercise in any planning situation, SWOT considers the event in the context of its environment and particularly relative to any competition: Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats * Forces and trends affecting events Considers what forces are acting on the event and the event sector.
