Introduction 1.1 Introduction to the Paper At the paper’s very beginning, a total introduction should be given. The introduction can be divided into two parts: A brief introduction to the novel can provide readers with the whole story and some details, especially the readers who didn’t read the novel The Story of the Stone before. It can help them have a good grasp of the paper; then, a concise introduction about cultural differences in the English version is the second part. There are some examples to describe some differences in the different English versions, we can find some differences on ideology between Chinese and Westerner from these vocabulary translated comparisons. Next, the chief discussion concentrates on four parts: in the first part, the symbolism of the colours will be mentioned. The different cultural meanings of Red and Green in Chinese and Western are the main points under discussion. Because the two colours?(Red and Green) are often appeared in the novel. In the second part, the different forms of address and different concepts of generation in family embody in the novel. We can see the different social stratum concepts between Chinese and Western. The third part is cultural traditional differences in vocabulary translation. Many examples will be given and we can clearly find the different cultural meanings of some words in different cultures. The last part is about some unique Chinese idioms and allusions. At last, the paper will come to a conclusion. 1.2 The Brief Introduction to the Novel The Story of the Stone is a controversial work, so that when discussing it even the best of friends almost come to blow. Two hundred years have passed since its first appearance, and yet this novel is still a hot topic among the Chinese people, and criticism and research concerning it have crystallized into a specialized branch of study, whimsically referr
