What are the principles for good lesson planning? What are macro planning and micro planning? What are the components of a good lesson plan? Do language teachers benefit from proper lesson planning? Why? Any internal and external reasons? Task 1 ‘The success with which a teacher conduct a lesson is often thought to depends on the effectiveness with which the lesson was planned’. Richards, 1998:103 Internal reasons In order to feel more confident To learn the subject matter better To enable lessons to run more smoothly To anticipate problems before they happen External reasons To satisfy the expectations of the principal or supervisor To take into account the different backgrounds, interests, learning styles and abilities of the students in one’s class. To help the teacher think about the objectives, content, materials, sequencing, timing and activities and so as to meet the requirements of the curriculum To help a substitute teacher to take over a class with clear objectives, procedures and activities when the teacher cannot teach. Principles for good lesson planning Aim: realistic goals of a lesson. Variety: a number of different types of activities to maintain interest and motivation Flexibility: extra or alternative tasks Learnability: within the learning capacity, neither beyond nor below students’ coping ability Linkage: stages and steps are linked with one another Macro vs. Micro planning Programme planning/ Whole course planning one semester planning half a semester planning unit planning Lesson planning Macro planning Knowing about the profession Knowing about the institution Knowing about the learners Knowing about the curriculum/syllabus Knowing about
