President of IFBLS, Gry Andersen As Biomedical Laboratory Scientists / Biomedical Scientists (BLS’/BS’) we are part of a global work force, creating new challenges and opportunities. An electronic survey regarding this topic was sent to all the members in IFBLS in August 2007. The goal for IFBLS was to get an indication of the employment market for BLS world wide. A total of 23 member associations responded to the survey. The questions investigate issues related to the recruitment for education and the employment market for BLS in the member countries. The summary of the first results was presented at the Chief Delegate meeting in September and discussed in a workshop. The present status regarding recruitment to the education and to the professional workforce varies from country to country and the progress depends upon many different variables. Some of the variables are: • Number of potential students • Status and interest among potential students to become BLS/BS • Established national curriculum/no established national curriculum • Employment opportunities • Salary • Incentives to continuing and further education • Number of people retiring from the profession • International acknowledgement of each country’s BLS education (possibility to recruit BLS or seek employment as BLS in other countries). • Development within the health care system and organisation of medical laboratories • Indicators and statistics available to the decision-makers • Brain drain to more attractive employment markets The presentation gives an overview of the result of the survey and recommendations for the continui
