Define your philosophy of education and discuss it in terms of the different philosophies we have studied. Both of my parents were teachers, one a high school teacher and the other an elementary teacher. After watching them grading papers, talking to parents, preparing lesson plans, and complaining about the little money they made for all the work that they did; I knew that I did not want to be a teacher. However, there were two focal points that made me change my mind. I was majoring in Computer Science and Engineering and I visited a school with my mother and the children were very unruly. After I assessed the situation, I thought that I could make a difference in the lives of children. I immediately said to my mother, “I think I can help those students.” I then changed my major to Mathematics Education. Shortly after I decided to become a teacher, my mentor and former teacher asked me what my philosophy of education was. I pondered over that question, reflecting on all the teachers who have made an impact on my life. What were their qualities? What made them effective teachers? Why did the students respond positively or negatively to their teaching styles? What qualities did I want to possess as a teacher? Hence, my philosophy became to provide my students with an education that prepared them to be successful in this ever changing global society. Although Title I had not been reauthorized, I knew that this was becoming a fast-paced technological world, and I could “Leave No Child Behind.” As I reflect on the question again some 20 years later, my philosophy remains the same, “Leave No Child Behind.” All children can learn. I feel that we have to develop relationships with students, find the things that are relevant to them, inspire them to learn and set high standards for them.
