This is a time for the Chinese to congratulate each other on having passed through another year, a time to finish out the old, and to welcome in the new year 。GUONIAN 过 年 (to have made it through the old year), and BAINIAN 拜 年 （to congratulate the New Year ）have become common expressions 。 Socially, Chinese New Year is a time for family reunions and for visiting friends and relatives. This holiday, more than any other Chinese holiday, stresses the importance of family ties. The family reunion dinner on Chinese New Years Eve is the most important family occasion of the year. On New Year’s Day, the children are given HONGBAO 红包, good luck money wrapped in little red envelopes, and everyone wears new clothes. Starting from the second day, people go out to visit friends and relatives, taking with them gifts and HONGBAO for the children. The entire first week is a time for socializing and amusement. Firecrackers, which symbolize driving away evil spirits, are heard throughout the first two weeks of the New Year. The New Year celebration ends on the 15th day of the First Month with the Lantern Festival (元宵节). On the evening of that day, people carry lanterns into the streets to take part in a great parade. Young men highlight the parade with a dragon dance.
