Priestley Abstract Viewed in terms of accepted practices, concrete construction operations leave much to be desired with respect to the quality, serviceability, and safety of completed structures. The shortcomings of these operations became abundantly clear when a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck northern Pakistan on October 8, 2005, destroying thousands of buildings, damaging bridges, and killing an estimated 79,000 people. The unusually low quality of construction operations prevalent was a major cause of the immense devastation. Keywords: Concrete Placing Curing Construction Technology Concrete pouring If the concrete is poured on the ground, the ground should have enough moisture to prevent it from absorbing the moisture in the concrete. If new concrete is to be placed on or near the concrete that has already been solidified, the surface of the poured concrete should be completely removed, preferably using high-pressure air, high-pressure water flow, or wire brushes. The watch should be wet, but there should be no water collection. A small amount of grout should be brushed over the entire area, and then a layer of mortar with a thickness of 1/2 inch should be laid immediately. New concrete should be laid on or beside the mortar. In order to reduce the segregation of the concrete due to transportation after pouring, the concrete should be prepared as close as possible to the place where it was last poured. It should be layered so that each layer can be compacted. The time between placements of each layer should be limited to guarantee a good combination of the newly cast concrete and the front pouring. When pouring concrete into deeper forms, a duct should be used to limit the free fall height of the concrete to no more than 3 or 4 ft to prevent the concrete from segregating.
