Thesesculpturesweremostlymadefromthe1sttothe4thcenturyA.D.andmanyofthemwerecreatedon thebasisofprevalentpopularfolktalesinthatperiod,whichnowbecomeimportantresearchmaterialsofancientIndianfolkliterature. However, duetothe paucityintheavailabilityofwrittenandoraltextsofancientIndianfolkliterature,narrativesculpturesbecomethearchivalrecordandneedtobeinvestigatedfromtheregionalizedlocal perspectives. Foralongtime,scholarsstudiedGandhāraartmainlyfromtheperspective ofarchaeology,fineartsandreligiousstatuestogetherwiththecolonialperspectiveofexpansionofthewest,butthereisacompletenegationtothetransformationsoffolkliteraryinformationaswellasthefunctioningofliteratureinaparticularhistorical-culturalcontextofGandhāransculptureitself.ManystudiesonGandhārawerecaughtbetweenthecolonialsyndromesofcolonialversusnationalisticdiscoursesbutalargenumberof studiesareconfinedtothesourcesanddevelopmentofGandhāraasaunifiedpictorialtraditionandhowthenon-Gandhāran/non-IndiansourceshavebeeninstrumentalinthematrixofGandhāranstyle.
