ABSTRACTInthepaper,hydrophobiczeinwasusedastherawmaterial,combinedwithitsspecialsolubilitybehaviorandthehydrophobicpropertiesofsilicalite-1,fourkindsofmembraneswithdifferentstructuresweredesignedforseparation,suchaszeinsingle(ZS)membraneandzeincomposite(ZC)membrane,modifiedzeinmembrane,zein/silicalite-1compositemembrane.Thepervaporationprocesswasappliedforevaluatingtheseparationperformanceofthemembranesforlowconcentrationsethanolaqueoussolution,whichstimulatethebio-ethanolfermentationsolution.Zeinsingle(ZS)membranewasdevelopedbyspincoatingzeinsolutionontoporousasymmetricaluminatablets.Whereas,thezeincomposite(ZC)membraneconsistedoftwolayers,wheretheinnerlayerwasamicrospherefilmcastfromsolutionofzein-basedmicrospheres,whichis preparedbyphaseseparationandbasedonthecharacteristicsolubilityofzein.Andtheouter layerwasacontinuouszeinfilmjustsimilartoZSmembrane.Theseparationmembranehadanaveragethicknessof10μm,singlegaspermeationconfirmedthatthemembraneswerefreeofdefectsandmaintainedtheirintegrityduringpervaporation.The ZS andZCmembranescaneffectivelyconcentrateethanolfroma3wt%feedto8.73wt%and9.51wt%,respectivelyafter8hofpervaporationat298K.Thepermeationfluxincreasedasthetemperatureincreased,andtheseparationfactordecreasedasthetemperatureincreased.ThegoodethanolpermselectivityofZSandZCmembranescanbeexplained bytheSwitchEffect.ZeinwasmodifiedbyhexadecanoylchlorideviaFriedel-Craftsacylationreactiontoimprovethehydrophobicity.Then,amodifiedzeinmembranesupportedonporousaluminasubstratewaspreparedbyspin-coatingprocess.Themodifiedmembranehadanaveragethicknessof10μmandshowedbetterseparationabilitythanunmodifiedone.Themodifiedmembraneeffectivelyconcentratedethanolfrom3wt%ethanol/waterfeedto11.74wt%bypervaporationat303K.Theseparationfactors(α)ofethanolandthetotalpermeatefluxes(J)at298Kwere3.4~3.7and0.65~0.70kg/m2hr.Thepermeationfluxincreasedandtheseparationfactordecreasedastheconcentrationincreased.ComparedwiththeZSmembrane,themodifiedzeinmembraneismorehydrophobic,whichmakesagreatof
