A magazine is a periodic (定期的) publication that provides people with current information on a broad range of topics Magazine is also called periodical (期刊 ), because it is issued on a regular basis. According to the issue time, there are monthly (月刊), weekly (周刊), quarterly (季刊), fortnightly (半月刊), bimonthly (双月刊) annual (年刊) Introduction to Magazines 1. What is “magazine”? Originally, the word “magazine” was to mean a storehouse for grain or gunpowder. The first periodical to use the word magazine in its title was started in London by Edward Cave in 1731. Cave used the word magazine in the name of his Gentlemans Magazine to suggest that this new publication was a storehouse of information, providing all the news that a civilized person needed in order to keep up to date on what was going on in the world. Caves magazine was tremendously successful, and within a few years several spin-off publications began to appear in London and in the United States. Introduction to Magazines 2. Categories of Magazine According to the coverage and target reader, there are three distinct categories: Trade Magazine （行业类期刊） News Magazine Consumer Magazine Introduction to Magazines 2.
