An Asian View of Chinese Architecture ABSTRACT Being the largest and the oldest country in East Asia, what contributions has Chinese architecture made in Asia? Neighboring more than a dozen countries and connecting with West Asia and South Asia through the Silk Road and maritime navigation, what inl uences has Chinese architecture received from other countries? In the modernization of Chinese architecture, what can Chinese architects benefit from traditions and experiments of other Asian countries? Regarding modern architecture, which shared experiences of China with other Asian countries have complemented that of the industrialized West and have become a unique part in world architectural history? Calling for an Asian view of Chinese architecture, this paper argues that this perspective is not only crucial for the understanding of Chinese architecture’s past, but also imperative for the development of its future.
