* * * * * * * * Culture of Chinese Miao Nationality The Miao Nationality Introduction Custom Culture Special food of miao Introduction With a population of 8,940,116, the Miao people form one of the largest ethnic minorities in southwest China. They are mainly distributed across Guizhou, Yunnan, Hunan and Sichuan provinces and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and a small number live on Hainan Island, in Guangdong Province and in southwest Hubei Province. Most of them live in tightly-knit(紧密的) communities, with a few living in areas inhabited by several other ethnic groups. On the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and in some remote mountainous areas, Miao villages are comprised(组成) of a few families, and are scattered on mountain slopes(山坡) and plains(平原). Much of the Miao area is hilly or mountainous, and is drained (流淌着)by several big rivers. The weather is mild with a generous rainfall(降雨), and the area is rich in natural resources. Major crops include paddy rice, maize(玉米), potatoes, Chinese sorghum, beans, rape(油菜), peanuts, tobacco. Hainan Island is abundant in tropical fruits. miao’s clothes This style is prevalent in xiangxi(湘西) The clothing varys from place to place. This style is prevalent in chuan, qian ,dian.(川黔滇) Qiandong’style(黔东的款式) Because timber(树木) resources are plentiful in most Miao areas, houses are usually built of wood, and roofed with fir(冷杉) bark(树皮) or tiles(瓦片) or are thatched(用茅草覆盖的). In central and western Guizhou, houses are roofed with stone slabs(平板厚板).
