Gift of A Bright MoonLin Qingxuan (Taiwan, China) The Daoist master lives in a thatch-roofed hut in the deep mountain to cultivate his mind. One moon-lit evening he took a long stroll in the woods and experienced a sudden enlightenment about the meaning of his existence in this world. Returning to his abode with joy, the Daoist master noticed his hut being visited by a thief. He stood outside the door and waited. Before long the thief emerged from inside the hut, empty-handed, and was met by the Daoist master at the door. Knowing that the thief wouldn’t be able to find anything valuable, he had already removed his jacket and was holding it in his hand. The thief was stunned. Before he could do or say anything, the Daoist master said: “Ah, since you traveled such a long distance through the mountain to see me, I can not let you leave empty-handed. Besides, the night is getting chillier. So, why don’t you have this jacket of mine.” With that, he put the jacket on the thief’s shoulders. At a loss what to say, the thief left with his head low. As the Daoist master watched the thief walking through bright moonlight and disappearing into the woods, he couldn’t help but sigh: “Poor man. If only I could give him a bright moon.” With the thief gone, the Daoist master stepped into his hut, stripped to the waist, and sat down to meditate. He gazed at the bright moon outside the window and soon his entire being merged into the world around him. The next day, being caressed by warm sunshine, the Daoist master opened his eyes from the deep meditative state. Then he
