Ernest Hemingway Considered a master of the understated prose style which became his trademark, he was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in literature. Early Life Born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois: Hemingway’s Father Physician who came from a respectable, civic-minded family Apparently was reasonably successful; family lived in a large house in a neighborhood with other professionals Great outdoorsman; Hemingway’s love for nature comes from his father Suffered from depression and eventually committed suicide Hemingway’s Mother By all accounts an interesting, imposing woman: “a personality who could not be ignored” She was an opera singer and music teacher who also composed and published music; had a studio and recital hall in their house Hemingway as a boy Very athletic: football, cross country, boxing, swimming, water polo Read widely, both classics and popular books of the day Never went to college, but had a strong secondary school education Beginnings as a writer October 1917: becomes a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star Internalized the newspaper’s rules for style: “short first paragraphs, vigorous language, no superfluous words, few adjectives, no trite phrases” Said he “learned to write a simple, declarative sentence” from the experience Hemingway’s War Enlisted in service; wanted to go to war Eye problem prevented him from being immediately accepted; so he joined the Red Cross as an ambulance driver in Italy instead Hemingway’s War July 8, 1918: Hemingway severely wounded when an Austrian trench mortar exploded nearby Stopped breathing/heart stopped beating briefly Received some 130 pieces of shrapnel below the waist, including machine gun pellets Supposedly he was “dead”—and later claimed to have had an out-of-body experience, much like the one Frederic describes in Farewell Hemingway’s wound One of the formative influences on his life, his wound becomes a metaphor for the post WWI condition of the world Hemingway’s brush with death influences hi
