Archetypal Criticism It is a type of critical theory that interprets a text by focusing on recurring myths and archetypes in literature ,it is also known as mythic criticism . Myths: the story of Cinderella; the story of the Cowherd and the Weaving Maid ; Archetypes Archetype s are characters, themes, images and plot elements stored in the collective unconscious. They compose the world’s stories, myths, religions, literature, dreams, and art. They articulate the human experience; the dreams and fears shared by all mankind Collective Unconscious is a number of innate thoughts, feelings, instincts, and memories that reside in the unconsciousness of all people. ( Oedipus complex) Common Archetypes Images water—Represents life, mystery of creation; birth-death-resurrection; cleansing, purification and redemption; fertility and growth sea—mother of life; spiritual mystery and infinity; death and rebirth; timelessness and eternity rivers—death and rebirth (baptism); flowing of time into eternity; transitional phases of the life cycle; The Cave Represents the womb.
