Lesson one CLASS OPENING Start the New School Year Right: Introductions Introduce yourself to the class in a friend, informal Way. Ask your students to introduce themselves, too in English! If some of them are too shy to speak, you can ask questions, such as: What is your name? Where are you from? It is usually easier to answer questions in a new environment than to speak independently. Never forget to praise each student for what he or she says in English! You won’t have enough time for everyone to speak to the whole class in this lesson, but introductions are still important. The purpose is to bring the class together in the shortest possible time on familiar and friendly terms. This will pave the way for later success. Here are some choice: Divide the class into several groups (by row, for example). Ask the students to introduce themselves to each other. Ask for a few volunteers each lesion to stand and briefly introduce themselves. The Topic for This Unit Please see “Teaching Techniques” at the back of this teacher’s guide for suggestions for introducing units. Here are some step-by-step instructions for one way to do it. Ask the students to predict what junior high school is like in Canada. Are the schools bigger or smaller than in China? Do students have one or many teachers? How big is each class: bigger or smaller than in China? Do the students have any other predictions? Step1:Ask the students to discuss the questions in “Think about it”. Step2: let the students listen to the tape (of the first email)carefully with the following questions: Where did Li Ming write the letter? How many pupils are there in Li Ming’s class? Step3: Let the students listen to the tape(of the second e-mail) carefully with the following question: Who will come from the U.K? Step4: Ask the students to read the text fast and silently. Then have discussion about the two e-mails in detail: Who is the e-mail from and to? What can you learn from the two e-mails a second time. Step5:
